The Great Goonga Pehlwan (Rustam-e-Hind)
The Great Feroz Deen urf “Goonga Pehlwan” (dumb and mute wrestler) Rustam-e Hind was the greatest wrestler ever produced by the soil of Sialkot. He was born in a village named Jharan, District Sialkot. Goonga Pehlawan was a tall rock strong man above six feet (as told by my late father Chaudhry Munawwar Nasrullah Khan he met him along with his “GURZ” {GURZ is a trophy and a great matter of pride for any Pehlawan}in Daska in his childhood). The whole world of desi kushti was shocked when the famous Wrestler and Champion Imam Buksh of those times (who was the younger brother of great and legendary Gama Pehlawan) was defeated by Goonga Pehlawan, it was an upset and the news was spread in the whole subcontinent like a jungle fire. At that time Goonga was very young and the existing Champion Imam Buksh was was a mature strong Pehlawan with lot of strength and experience and at the peak of his career and was considered a solid rock which couldn’t be defeated. This wrestling was held at Minto Park Lahore. It was great shock for the Gama Pehlawan family and they took it as a matter of prestige and wanted to bounce back. An expert Ustad Pehlawan of Sialkot Ustad Kareem Buksh Pehlawan was appointed by Great Gama Pehlawan to train Imam Buksh for almost a year to fight back against Goonga Pehlawan.
Later on after a period of time Goonga was defeated by Imam Buksh.
My grandfather Chaudhry Shakrullah Khan Raees-e-Daska was a great promoter and supporter of cultural “Desi kushti and Kabaddi” and he used to finance and sponsor these events and few top Pehlawans and Kabaddars, Goonga Pehlawan was one of them and received a permanent sponsorship (wazeefa) from him. According to Goonga Pehlawan requests Chaudhry Sb went to see few of his wrestling competitions and before the match starts he always came to Chaudhry Sb and bowed his shoulders with respect to receive a “THAAPDA” at his shoulders from Chaudhry Sb. Goonga Pehlawan was a frequent visitor of Daska and received 100Rs/- cash prize at his every win from Chaudhry Sb other than his regular wazeefa, in those days 100 Rs was a huge huge amount equivalent to Lakhs of amount today but the difference is that today there are numerous people who can earn lakhs but in those days many people couldn’t see the amount of 100 Rs in one go.
Goonga Pehlawan Rustam e Hind died in the young age of 45 before partition in a road accident and a big chapter of desi kushti in Sialkot reached to it’s end. May his soul Rest In Peace (Amen).
Many folk stories of Goonga Pehlawan are famous in our area and he was considered as “HERCULES” the people who migrated from District Sialkot to India still remember him and many of them saw him in their youth or childhood.
